By Sunday, everyone in the group had departed, but I was lucky enough to stay until Monday morning (a big thank you to Netta, and Sparkle Beetle for re-arranging my flight), so “A” and I soaked up our last day in Nola the best way we knew how. I’ll admit, I kept getting sad periodically throughout the day because I didn’t want it to end! But even though it was our last day, we definitely made the most of it by starting off on the right foot: eating beignets at Cafe Du Monde. “A” hadn’t been yet, so we of course had to go. They were amazing per usual.
Afterward, we walked over to the river so he could see the Mississippi, then struck out to find some brightly painted houses and quaint streets. We decided to go off the beaten track of Bourbon Street and indulge in sweetly named streets like Dauphine, Dumaine and Toulouse. I really loved the juxtaposition of the vibrant hues versus muted shades that shifted and surrounded us at every corner. The streets were almost silent, albeit a bird twittering in the distance, and it all felt terribly romantic and old fashioned.
For the next half of our day we decided to be extremely touristy and head back over to Bourbon Street to get “A” a Pina Colada from one of the machines. We’re classy like that. I stuck with a bloody mary, and after people watching for a bit, we took our drinks to go! It still amazes me that you can do that without anyone saying a word. We walked down the street and checked out different music venues and peeked in cheesy bars, until we were ready for some real sustenance. Having not eaten a shrimp po’ boy or et tu fe, we decided it was crucial that we tried both before leaving town. We settled on Mother’s Restaurant, a no muss, no fuss place that served up exactly what we were looking for. I was a little uneasy about eating crawfish, but of course now I am a convert. I have yet to partake in a crawfish boil, but maybe I will just save that for the next time I’m down in the Big Easy. xoxo
